For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked; (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;) The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation; and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished…2 Peter 2:6-9
In the book of Amos, in the Bible, Chapter 8, verses 11 & 12 talk about a time when there will be a famine sent from God. Not a famine of food or water, but of hearing the words of the Lord. Today, many people do not want to hear God’s word. They are offended because it brings to light their sins.
Recently on the Hiawatha Bike trail, I went through a railroad tunnel that was almost two miles long! It was very dark, besides reflectors, there wasn’t any artificial lighting. The bikes were equipped with a light that helped a little, but you couldn’t really see very well. It was a bright, sunny day, and when I got toward the end of the tunnel, there was enough light to see the exit, and then, bright sun! The light exposed everything around me, and I could feel its warmth, after the cool tunnel. I could see the little creek and wildflowers, and a beautiful waterfall.
Many people have a desire to do evil things, and they are in darkness. The light of God’s word exposes sin and darkness. In fact, darkness and light don’t mix. It can’t be dark anymore if it is light. Some people are afraid of that light.
We have an enemy that has been around since humans were put on Earth. he was one of those angels that sinned in heaven and was cast down. Satan wants to keep us away from the truth of our sins. The Bible describes him as a deceiver. He wants to keep us in the tunnel with tunnel vision. Satan knows his time is short, and wants to deceive as many as possible. God has a plan for him. Satan will be cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. Death and Hell are going to be cast into the lake of fire too. Read Revelation 20, if it interests you about God’s final plans that were told to his disciple John in a Revelation while he was exiled on an island, called Patmos.
The passage in Peter says that Lot was vexed by the deeds of the Sodomites. He saw the evil they were doing, and heard their filthy conversations. When we love God, we are offended by evil. I remember a movie that sounded like a fun family movie that I rented to watch with my family. There wasn’t any hint that it contained homosexual, lewd behavior and lots of swearing. My son teased me, and told me that I am so careful about what movies he rents, how come I rented such an awful movie? We took it out after only a few minutes and brought it back to the store, and informed the clerk that it should have had a more mature rating, and it was definitely not for families.
I think of that verse in Amos about a famine for the word of the Lord. People who are evil want to silence Christians, and every mention of God. Freedom from Religion is a well funded organization that lobbies our government to take down crosses, statues, the Ten Commandments, pictures, and other things that make mention of the Christian religion. The Ten Commandments are the law, so we can know what God requires of us. There is also judgment by a Holy God when those laws are broken. Every one of us has broken at least one of them and is in danger of hell fire. However, God provided that His own Son would take our punishment. He completely forgives us if we just believe that Jesus is God’s Son, that Jesus died for our sins, and that Jesus rose again, and is preparing a place for us, and making intercession to God on our behalf.
Sounds simple, but as you can see through these devotions on Abram, that God is faithful about what He says He’ll do. If you haven’t received Jesus as your Lord and Savior, do so today, before there is another famine of hearing the Lord’s Word, lest you miss the mark, and are judged in your sins. God doesn’t want that for you. He says that He is not willing that anyone should perish, but that all should have life, and have it more abundantly.
You can’t tell God anything that He doesn’t know already. If you confess your sins, He is faithful and just to forgive your sins, and cleanse you from all unrighteousness. God’s Son, Jesus, is the only one that can help us and deliver us from God’s judgment.
Lord, be with me as this earth is experiencing so much chaos. My brothers and sisters in the LORD are suffering, and I pray that You would strengthen them, give them courage, and help each one of us to be close to You. Thank you for Your promises and all Your provisions. Thank You for dying for me, for interceding on my behalf, for conquering death and hell! If anyone is in doubt of You, help them to have faith and know You will do what You say. In Jesus Name, Amen.
