Clothe Yourself with Christ

Let us behave decently as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful flesh. Romans 13:13,14 (NIV)

Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering (sexual immorality and lewdness)  and wantonness (extreme indulgence in sensual pleasures), not in strife (contentions, dissension, stirring up anger) and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof. Romans 13:13,14 KJV

Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God. 2 Corinthians 7:1 NIV

Paul, the writer of Romans and Corinthians, has a wonderful way of speaking. These verses could not be spoken any more clearly.  This is a continuation on my thoughts of light and darkness.

What would life be like for us if we really put on Jesus when we woke up in the morning?  We would walk around loving people, probably more than we do. We would try to help those in need. We would be speaking about God’s kingdom, and taking time for children. We would speak the truth, visit people, and speak up in those churches that are deceiving people, and running God’s house like a business.

I wrote two versions of this first verse, because there were words that I had to look up in the dictionary: debauchery, dissension, chambering, and wantonness.  i thought the two translations would help me understand the message better. Debauchery is drunkenness, lewdness, sexual immorality. Dissension is when you try to stir up trouble in a group that feels strongly convicted about something. I wrote the definition of wantonness and chambering in parenthesis above.  We would all do better to act on these verses, when we claim we are followers of Christ.

A while back, it was a popular saying among Christians to ask ourselves what Jesus would do.  If that guided our actions, we could really make a difference in the world, and in our own lives, for the better. We would shine brightly like the day. That light in our lives would reflect so intensely, there wouldn’t be room for darkness!

There are people who want to do sinful things in the dark, where they think the light won’t expose their deeds. God is everywhere, and sees what is done in secret. Nothing is hidden from Him.  I’ve been in those establishments, where the music is loud, people are drunk, some people get angry and start fights, and the smell of alcohol permeates every molecule of air. For me being in those establishments was where I felt the presence of evil.  Evil has a heaviness, and in the darkness, it is even a heavier experience.  I don’t like that feeling.  I want to be in the light, away from the actions of evil. The sad thing is that people play with evil, until they no longer feel the conviction of it.

As these verses tell us to put on Christ, I think of how the sun shines all day, and the moon picks up the reflection of the sun’s light, then shines through the night.  We are like that when we put on Jesus.  We can reflect His love and actions to people in this dark world.

Lord, help me to put on You, to clothe myself with You every day.  I want to live for You, and need You to give me the knowledge, wisdom, and discernment to do that in this world.  Help me to reflect Your beautiful light. Thank You, Lord.
