Dead Faith

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. James 2:26

I am a visual person.  When I read this verse, I see what a body without the spirit looks like.  As an emergency medical technician, I saw death.  That is a somber experience.

The other part of the verse says that faith without works is dead also.  That is not a pretty sight.  A person who believes in Jesus, but refuses to help the poor, the elderly, to visit those in prison, and the hospital, to help those who need help, how then are they any different than the world?  If one has the means to help someone, but turns away from helping, they are neglecting their faith and duty as a Christian.

Today’s devotions were about walking the walk, not just talking the talk.  Jesus calls it hypocrisy, when a person is only religious outwardly.  He called some of the religious leaders of His time “white washed tombs with dead bodies inside”:

Matthew 23:27: “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean.

These religious leaders piled requirements on the people that attended their synagogues, yet they were not living Godly lives. It was sort of like when the Bible talks about taking a speck out of your brother’s eye, when you have a plank in your own eye.

We are in the boat of life together.  It saddens me that there are so few churches to go to for prayer and help. Many Christians pay to see a Counselor, because they can’t talk to a pastor or parishioner.  We all lead such busy lives that there is no time to help someone with trouble.  There are countless stories in the news of people looking the other way when crimes are committed, refusing to help.  Then, there are those stories of people who act, who help, who can’t turn away in the face of danger.

Just yesterday, I saw the video of the truck driver who saw an accident happen, stopped his truck, and ran out with a fire extinguisher to try to put out a car fire, and save the occupants inside. Here is a link to that video:

Lord, help me to be a “doer” of the Word, not just a “hearer”.  I have made many mistakes in my life, and have missed opportunities to help others.  I pray for Your forgiveness.  Help me to take action to help others when I see a need and am able to help.  Thank You!
