You shall have no other gods before me.

I am reading a special series on the Ten Commandments, using the “Duck Commander Devotional”.  These are my thoughts on today’s verse.

You shall have no other gods before me. Exodus 20:3

Biblegateway.com allows one to search for words or phrases in different versions of the Bible.  In the NKJV, there are many verses that contain the word “commandments”. How important is the law? After all, it is by grace we are saved, through faith, and not of ourselves.

Revelation 22:13-15 says,

13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.”

14 Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. 15 But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie.

1 John 5:3 says,

“For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments And His commandments are not burdensome.”

1 John 3:4 says,

“Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him.”

In the United States, we have laws and codes to go by.  If we do things that are against the law, we could be jailed, or imprisoned, maybe even put to death.  Part of our citizenship is to follow these laws, or face consequences.

We have a holy citizenship, when we profess to believe in God, and the one who gives us our laws is God, Himself. The same principals apply to His citizenship. If we follow His laws, things go pretty well, but if we don’t, we suffer many consequences.. Also, we are in danger of harming ourselves or others by our actions. He is so loving and forgiving, though. If we confess our sins, He is willing to forgive us and cleanse us from our sins, and remember them no more.

Without acknowledging the most high God who gave us these rules, we probably wouldn’t be very passionate about following them.

When God gave the first commandment to Moses, He explained who He is– the God that brought Israel out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.  That is who God is, and it is such an honor to love Him and serve Him.  He is the God who delivers us from the “house of bondage” still.  We are bound by so many things:  for some it is alcohol, drugs, loneliness, guilt, pornography, or some other thing, but God is willing and able to deliver, restore, and set free the captives!!!!

That is the reason to put God first in our lives. He deserves our full attention!

Help me, God, to put You first, above all else in my life.  Thank You for Your laws that show us how to live a life that pleases You. Help me not to get distracted, or to lose focus of Your superiority in everything.  I love You so much!  Thank You for setting me free, and delivering me, when I didn’t have the power to do it myself.  You are so amazing!
