And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth. And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good, and the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
God is a God of action! The actions of God in these verses are that He said, He made, He set, He saw.
I am so glad God created the lights in the sky — the sun, the moon, the stars, the milky way, the northern lights, the lightning and more! He is an amazing artist, creator, and designer. It delights me to look at the stars at night, to see speckles of light in the darkness. Can you imagine a black sky with no light?
I look forward to seeing the phases of the moon, and how it changes from being full, to just a sliver of light.
On the ocean, sailors used the North Star to get their bearings. When there is less light, we know we are changing seasons. The moon helps determine tides. We are able to view different stars during various months.
As God said, these lights in the firmament would be used for signs, seasons, days, and years. They give us light in the darkness. They are another amazing, beautiful wonder that God created for us to enjoy.
As Christmas approaches, I think of the wise men and the star that they saw: Matthew 2:2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
For the return of Christ, we can watch for signs and wonders too:
For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Matthew 24:27
Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the power of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Matthew 24: 29,30
Our amazing God knows the beginning and the end!
Dear God, I am truly amazed when I read the story of the beginning of the world in Genesis. I see how amazing Your creation is, and I am pointed to an all-powerful, mighty, glorious God! I see Your wonderful ability to create something beautiful out of nothing. I am amazed, astounded, bewildered, and mesmerized. Thank You for everything! Your creation is good, really good!
