For every one that useth milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. but strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. Hebrews 5:13,14 (KJV)
Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. Hebrews 5:13,14 (NIV)
Because I am a home school mom, I can relate to this verse.
My son is taking eleventh grade Chemistry. The books we are using introduce concepts that are very difficult to understand, even for the parent. They are written in the terms of a University or College level, rather than a High School level. It is frustrating, as we really needed the basic concepts to grasp, rather than the difficult, above grade level information and formulas.
Chemistry is an amazing science! I love learning about elements, molecules, and all the things that can be combined to make other useful things. However, this course is heavy into equations and mathematical formulas, without good explanations of how to fill in the numbers for the formulas. We usually spend a lot of time finding information on the internet to fill in the unknowns, or we use a more simple video type dvd program, and try to get more basic information to understand what is being introduced. It is hard work to keep on schedule, as it is too fast paced, and my son is becoming frustrated as well.
Without having the basic concepts down, it is hard to go on to receive more useful information. We have nothing to build on. It just becomes empty, useless words, or a language too hard to understand.
This brings me to this verse in Hebrews, and our Christian lives. — We are to build up our faith so we can eat the meat of the gospel.
Babies don’t start filling their bodies with meat, but milk. Then they become accustomed to new food that is introduced. The basic baby nutrition is milk, and when they are ready, they are introduced to bits of more solid food, and then to meat.
Just as a Christian, it is best to start with the basic knowledge and understanding of Christ, and the message of sin and salvation. From there, God will reveal more things as you are ready.
There are some things in the Bible that are hard to understand, and one has to search the scriptures and find the truth, asking God for wisdom and understanding.
Above all, build on a truthful foundation, as religion can mix in the requirements of man, not God. We need to stay on our guard and keep from being deceived, as there are many false teachers and preachers — the blind leading the blind.
Surrounding ourselves with a community of believers really helps us grow, but let your main focus be on Christ Jesus.
Satan goes around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. When we are alone, we become an easy target.
We also need to remember the parable of the sower that Jesus told about. Matthew 13:18 “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart.
Ask God for understanding, and grow your faith in the Lord, from milk to meat.
Dear God, I thank You for everything. You give us an understanding of how we need to grow our faith in You. Help us to learn and become knowledgeable about Your truths. Protect us from evil. Give us the armor we need, the helmet of salvation, the sword of Your Spirit, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, the belt of truth, and feet prepared with the gospel of peace. Put Your word in our hearts so that we won’t sin against You. Thank You! Amen.
