Mike, the Headless Chicken:

The Supremacy of the Son of God: Colossians 1:15-23

15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

We have some interesting conversations at our house, especially now, that my son is seventeen.

His friend came over to visit, and I was pulled into their conversation about the story of Blackbeard, the Pirate of long ago.

One of the tales that have followed Blackbeard’s legend, is that he was beheaded, and his body was thrown out to sea, where it swam around the ship three times. http://americanfolklore.net/folklore/2010/07/blackbeards_ghost.html

My son, recalling an article he read about a chicken, said he knew of a man that cut off a chicken’s head, and it lived for over a year.

Doubting the story, he found it for us on the internet: http://www.miketheheadlesschicken.org/history , and Wikipedia has an article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_the_Headless_Chicken

It was determined by the University of Utah the reason it lived:

It was determined that the ax blade had missed the jugular vein and a clot had prevented Mike from bleeding to death. Although most of his head was in a jar, most of his brain stem and one ear was left on his body. Since most of a chicken’s reflex actions are controlled by the brain stem Mike was able to remain quite healthy.

As Christians, without our head, Jesus Christ, we are unable to function properly.

We cannot be a Christian without our Spiritual head, Jesus.

However, if we lose our physical head, we have life, because Jesus has the power over death. Revelation 6:

When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. 10 They called out in a loud voice, “How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?” 11 Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters, were killed just as they had been.

It is possible that people could be beheaded for their faith. Many Christians in the Middle East are experiencing this very thing. Take heart! Jesus has overcome the world!

Thank You, Jesus, for being the head, being supreme in all things, and for directing our paths, lighting the way with Your gospel. You are worthy of praise and honor and glory. Please give us clear messages and direction as we try to live for You. Thank You! Amen.
