For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. Philippians 1:21
In his letter to the Christians in Philippi, Paul encourages their faith by saying that his trials have been used for good, and for the furtherance of the gospel. He desired to be away from his body, and at home with the Lord. However, he sees it necessary that he should stay and preach the gospel.
Before becoming a Christian, Paul, once sought to kill Christians for their faith. He had a ‘bilnding’ experience that brought him to Christ.
He was with a group of men who were going to ’round up’ some Christians to persecute them, when Jesus appeared to him in a blinding light. It changed everything Paul did from that moment on.
Paul loved the Lord enormously. Paul had followed the Jewish religious laws, and thought that was the only way to please God, and get to heaven. But Jesus showed him that the way to heaven was through Christ, and that they were on the same team.
Whether we are like Peter, a fisherman who claimed he was a sinner, or like Paul who claimed he was a perfect follower of the law, if we believe in Jesus Christ, we are saved. There is no other way.
Then we can say that to live is Christ, and to die is gain!
Oh Lord, You are wonderful, good, and merciful. I pray for Your love to fill me. I know that You are the way, the truth, and the life, and that no man comes unto the Father except by You. Amen.
