Two Kinds of Wisdom (James 3:13-17)NIV
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.
17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.
We had some excitement in Idaho last night. I am sorry to say that I slept through it. We had a 4.2 magnitude earthquake nearby. My husband said our house creaked and it sounded like rumbling from a low aircraft, sometime around 11 pm.
The news had some stories on the Quake near Sandpoint, Idaho. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/
These verses above are about two kinds of wisdom. One kind is full of envy, selfish ambition, and with this kind of earthly, unspiritual, demonic wisdom, you will find disorder and every evil practice.
This kind of wisdom could be associated with the leadership of Germany, during the Holocaust. The leaders were envious of the wealth of the Jews, of their heritage, and blessing. They harbored selfish ambition to take over the world, and wanted to produce a dominant race of people, at the expense of those they thought were unworthy. It was earthly ambition, it was unspiritual, and demonic.
The other kind of wisdom comes from heaven. It is pure, peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.
I could liken this kind of wisdom to the life of Christ. He was all these things.
There is a huge contrast between the two kinds of wisdom. One destroys, the other saves.
Dear God, I pray for this heavenly wisdom that comes from heaven. Help me to be more like Jesus. I pray for the fruit of the Spirit, so that I can have the things I need to live a meaningful, rewarding, fruitful Christian life. I pray that I would be a good ambassador for You. Please forgive me of all wrong. Keep me from temptation, and deliver me from the evil one. Yours is the Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory, forever! Amen.
