When we are surrounded by people who do evil things, we know that they will not prevail forever. Evil brings a man to ruin. The wages of sin is death.
This Psalm is about a man who plotted evil against David. When Saul was seeking David to kill him, an Edomite,named Doeg, told Saul where David was at.
David starts this song with these verses:
Why do you boast of evil, you mighty hero?
Why do you boast all day long,
you who are a disgrace in the eyes of God?
You who practice deceit,
your tongue plots destruction;
it is like a sharpened razor.
You love evil rather than good,
falsehood rather than speaking the truth.
You love every harmful word,
you deceitful tongue!
Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin:
He will snatch you up and pluck you from your tent;
he will uproot you from the land of the living.
The righteous will see and fear;
they will laugh at you, saying,
“Here now is the man
who did not make God his stronghold
but trusted in his great wealth
and grew strong by destroying others!”
This is a warning for those who are seeking to destroy righteous people, and it is a comfort to those righteous people who have been hurt by the actions of evil people.
David ends the Psalm with these beautiful verses:
But I am like an olive tree
flourishing in the house of God;
I trust in God’s unfailing love
for ever and ever.
For what you have done I will always praise you
in the presence of your faithful people.
And I will hope in your name,
for your name is good.
I am reminded of many of our political leaders who are implementing evil laws. Our courts and justice system should be administering justice, not destroying people who are trying to do the right thing.
When you are persecuted, like David, remind yourself that you are like an olive tree, flourishing in the house of God. It is not about this world. You don’t belong to it. Trust in God’s unfailing love. Praise Him in the presence of His faithful people. Hope in His name, for it is good!!!!
Dear God, from the time of the first sin, there has been evil on this earth. I praise You for what You’ve done. You have taken care of everything. Evil will not last forever, but Your Word will. Your promises are true. I pray for Your will to be done. Thank You!!!! Amen.
